Planning a shared water supply investigation

Access and authority are as important as the equipment.

Map the people as well as the pipe

A shared supply can involve several occupiers, owners or a managing agent. Find out who can provide entry, operate authorised isolation points and approve work on the relevant land. The investigation needs a practical route to those decisions.

Explain what each property has observed

Separate meter readings, noise, damp and water-use changes by property and date. Existing plans or supplier findings may help establish the shared section. Avoid combining different symptoms into one assumed defect before testing has been completed.

Agree the scope and quotation

A shared network is not automatically covered by a single residential package. The instruction should identify the areas, systems, reporting and repair-authorisation process. Any interruption to other occupiers needs to be coordinated before the visit.

Keep these points in mind

  • Nominate a coordinating contact
  • Collect drawings and earlier reports
  • Agree access and interruption permissions

This guide provides general preparation information. The right investigation depends on the property, its systems and the evidence available. For active flooding, electrical danger or an unsafe ceiling, seek urgent appropriate help rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
